The Vaal Aerotropolis to be built in the Sedibeng District, southwest of Johannesburg, will serve as a key freight and logistics hub set to transform Emfuleni local municipality and the Sedibeng District of Gauteng province, South Africa.
Developed as a Public Private Partnership, the Vaal Aerotropolis will be the only airport in Gauteng where integrated air cargo services are designed and planned as a priority, with four flexible freighter stands.
It will have the initial capacity of 7.2 million passengers and 150 000 tons of freight per annum, serving as a crucial catalyst for global business and trade, just 50 minutes by road from Johannesburg and positioned to serve the global market. The Aerotropolis will feature extensive road networks, including direct access to the N1 and the proposed PWV5, a state-of-the-art international airport with a runway to accommodate any aircraft size, a cargo terminal, trade zones, agri-zones, and comprehensive commercial and medical facilities.
The project will also include Vaal Airport City, one of the first purpose-built aviation cities in Africa, with a minimum 4-star green rating and facilities for offices, retail, hospitality, a minimum 4-star rated hotel, medical facilities, including clinics and hospitals, and leisure. An agri-zone will ensure an integrated perishable supply chain, featuring a high-tech agricultural cluster with climate-controlled greenhouses, packhouses, a tissue culture lab, and Africa’s first air platform for live animal exports.
Furthermore, the project is directly connected to the cargo terminal, providing airside access to manufacturers, assemblers, and distributors, ensuring seamless integration and efficiency in operations.
