Citibank N.A. South Africa is celebrating 30 years of partnership, and impact. From the bank’s foundation, Citi’s story in South Africa has been one of continuous growth and transformation. Citi has leveraged its local expertise and global network to serve as a trusted partner providing financial services that enable economic progress.
The bank hosted a gala recently as part of activities to commemorate its 30-year operating presence. While celebrating the continued support and trust of clients, alumni and valued partners, the bank celebrated the enormous potential and investment proposition. For Citi, helping our clients navigate the challenges and embrace the opportunities of our rapidly changing world is fundamental to our mission of enabling growth and economic progress.
Since the bank commenced operations, Citi has played a pivotal role in equipping and upskilling the expertise of South Africa’s financial institutions. We have been part of the fabric of this society ever since our return to the country in 1995, building a business that embodies Citi’s mission.
The bank has long stood as a catalyst for meaningful progress, consistently championing initiatives that drive positive change in the communities it serves. We take pride in the many strategic community partnerships we have built through the years aimed at improving the lives of South Africans.
Through our R1.37 billion ($71.3 million) Equity Equivalent Investment Program (EEIP) designed to accelerate positive economic impact, we have set out to create new opportunities for South Africa and drive sustainable change through this contribution into the South African economy at large. Citi South Africa will provide the capital to the Mega City River Development in the Vaal, which will comprise the Vaal River City and Vaal Aerotropolis.
Our support of the Change A Life cycle tour actively supports the development of our communities through sport. Over the past five years, the programmes have created national and international champions in sports such as gymnastics, canoeing, mountain biking and athletics. Through our involvement we’ve proudly watched the projects grow in scale and impact – raising over R80 million and continuing to affect over 300 young South Africans as well as over 5000 family and community members.
As Citi honours its history and celebrates its resilience in South Africa, the bank is looking to the future, determined to embrace new opportunities.
